The three that I install on all new WordPress instances are WordPress Firewall 2, Login Lockdown, and W3 Total Cache. They all have their flaws, but I find sites load faster and run more securely with those three in place.

On any given project, I may also use Gravity Forms (paid, but very high-quality forms plugin with support); CMS Tree Page View or similar, to let page-heavy clients get a clean, hierarchical tree view of their pages; and of course bbPress for forums.

Can't wait for your book, it is going to be a big help to a lot of aspiring WP devs!

Wordpress is great cause you can do pretty much anything with it this days. I recommend you to tell designers they can step out of the box using the plugins More Types and More Fields to create their own Wordpress objects.

Using this plugins you can create a lot of things. From extra info in posts and pages to a product catalogue. Kudos on your first book. I know it will be the first of many. Good luck man.

Hey Jesse,
I recommend these plugins for every website: Contact Form 7, Google Analytics for WordPress, WordPress SEO by Yoast, Twitter Tools, CloudFlare, WordPress Importer.

And some personal favorites: Infinite Scroll, Instagrate to Wordpress, Portfolio Slideshow (responsive + mobile friendly).

Good luck!

Yah I think it's safe to say that Facebook has more "staying" power than hi-5 and myspace :) I agree it's def a great tool, I'm just not really a big fan of the way it's being used. I decided to create a covert family account with a different name and hopefully everyone will find my public profile more easily.

I jumped off Facebook and got on my high horse about a year ago and began to shake my head at my partners heavy use.

She has a good reason though as we're a 17 hour flight from her family and it's a way to bridge the gap that otherwise would require much more effort if it were left to phone calls.

Now I'm on it several times a day as a provider of social media services to several of my clients.

Love it or hate it, it's here to stay. (or at least that's what I said about hi-5, myspace and geocities).

I think subscription pricing is a great idea. Another option for students going into freelance work( or any work for that matter) is buy an education license right before you graduate. There are no restrictions on what that license is used for, just who can buy it, the EULA does allow commercial work on an education license. Adobe(and Apple) have even in the past run ad campaigns around April/May pushing graduating students to use their discount while they still can. The only problem is when it comes around time to upgrade you would have to buy a full retail license.

Great post Jesse, I read through it a few times. I completely agree — even when I was a kid I was able to shoot off emails to designers and devs all over the country, and everyone was always extremely helpful.

In high school I wrote one of my scholarship papers on how I wanted to give back just as much as I've received when I was first coming up as a web designer. I still have a lot of giving to go.
